At Texas Foot Specialists, we hope that all of our Sugar Land, Pasadena and Houston patients are staying healthy. If you’re a patient with diabetes, we want to remind you of the importance of not putting off seeking consultation for concerns associated with this condition and to maintain all treatment to manage the disease.

It’s dangerous to allow a wound to develop or worsen or to risk an infection developing by attempting self-care for tasks generally handled by our podiatrists, Dr. Bruce Miller and Dr. Gregory Mangum. If you are diabetic and need care or have a concern about your feet, contact our Sugar Land (281-242-4448), Pasadena (281-991-0600) , or Houston (713-664-6677) offices for a phone or in-person consultation. Below are some reminders about diabetic podiatric care.

  • Inspect your feet daily. It’s essential that you examine your feet top and bottom and even between your toes every day. Make it a natural addition to your cleaning routine. Look for bruises, cuts, rashes or red skin, growths or lumps, swelling, or any other unusual symptoms. Alert the podiatrist if you see anything concerning.

  • Do not attempt tasks that can lead to injury. Cutting toenails, taking care of an ingrown nail, or any other service that is either normally done at the podiatrist office or that can lead to a cut, chemical burn, or another injury, should not be tried at home. This greatly increases the risk of damage to the skin which can lead to an infection.

  • Keep your shoes on. Even if you are spending most of your time at home, it’s a good idea to keep feet covered. This greatly decreases the chances of small cuts or puncture wounds from sharp objects that may not be immediately noticed if you suffer from neuropathy.

  • Stay active. Regular exercise helps improve circulation and aids in preventing weight gain. If your regular fitness classes or outlets are unavailable, at the very least walk in your neighborhood. There are also many online fitness classes available.

  • Keep blood sugar under control. Stick to the dietary plan your doctor has recommended. Avoid eating out of boredom.
