At Texas Foot Specialists we know that it’s been an especially long winter and that the condition of your feet may have been pretty low on your priority list during the pandemic. But brighter—and sunnier—days are ahead and now is a good time to seriously take a look at your feet. If you don’t like what you see, it may be time to schedule an appointment with our podiatrists, Dr. Bruce Miller and Dr. Gregory Mangum. Below are some common foot disorders that can be unsightly as well as uncomfortable.

Toe Deformities

Bunions, hammertoes, and claw toes are a few examples of toes that are going where they’re not supposed to. In most cases, the root cause of a toe deformity is a biomechanical defect that may or may not be genetic. Your shoe choice, however, can exacerbate these conditions and accelerate their progression. Always choose styles that are roomy in the toe box and don’t squeeze or confine toes. Toe deformities will only get worse. When diagnosed and treated in the early stages, they can be managed. Toe deformities are not just displeasing to look at. They can be quite painful and impede your ability to perform daily functions as well as make it difficult to find comfortable shoes. For this reason, it’s best to seek treatment as soon as possible.

Warts

Another unattractive foot condition is warts. Warts are caused by a virus and transmitted by direct contact. Oftentimes warts are not painful and for this reason, patients may put off getting them treated. Sometimes warts will clear up on their own, but it can take a long time and they can spread. Don’t be tempted by home remedies or over-the-counter acid-based products. These can cause damage to the surrounding healthy tissue.

Fungal Toenails

The thought of sandals and flip-flops is less appealing when you have a fungal toenail. Thickening, discoloration, and crumbling around the edges of the nail are characteristic of this fungal infection. There are three main treatment options for toenail fungus: oral medications, topical medications, and the newest method, laser therapy, which we offer in our Sugar Land 281-242-4448, Pasadena 281-991-0600, or Houston 713-664-6677 offices.
