After more than a year of COVID restrictions, we at Texas Foot Specialists know that our patients are looking forward to summer vacations more than ever. Whether you plan to visit family, relax on a beach or find new adventures, we want to make sure that your feet stay healthy. Below are some tips to get you through your vacation foot-pain-free.

Pack List

Be sure to pack footcare essentials:

  • Prescription orthotics

  • Nail clippers and emery board

  • Foot powder

  • Moleskin to prevent blisters

  • Antibiotic ointment and bandages

Travel Day

Rule number one for travel day footwear—make sure it’s comfortable. In addition, follow these transportation specific suggestions:

Plane:

  • Wear socks. Unless you have TSA pre-check you’ll most likely be asked to remove your shoes at the security check. Being barefoot (along with thousands of other travelers) increases your risk of contracting a fungal infection like athlete’s foot.

  • Consider compression socks. If you have a long flight these types of socks can help maintain good circulation.

  • Get up and stretch periodically when possible.

Car, Bus or Train:

  • If you’re driving, plan to stop at least once every two hours. Get out of the car and walk around a bit to help keep blood flowing and avoid stiffness.

  • On public transportation stand and stretch as best as you are able.

  • Stay hydrated to help avoid swelling and cramping.

At Your Vacation Destination

  • Match your footwear with your activities. Don’t try to get away with taking a hike in sandals or joining in a family softball game while wearing flip flops. This is likely to result in an ankle sprain or other injury.

  • Apply sunscreen to your feet on beach and pool days and any time your feet are exposed to the sun, such as shopping excursions and sightseeing trips.

  • Keep feet dry. Choose shoes that allow for air circulation around your feet. If you’re wearing socks, be sure to have a spare pair with you and change if you notice your feet feel damp.

Treat any injuries promptly. Seek medical care locally and then follow up with our podiatrists, Dr. Bruce Miller and Dr. Gregory Mangum, when you return. Contact our Sugar Land (281-242-4448), Pasadena (281-991-0600 or Houston (713-664-6677) office for an appointment.
