At Texas Foot Specialists we know this summer will be packed with lots of hot-weather fun. But there are also more opportunities to pick up a fungal infection like athlete’s foot or toenail fungus. Fortunately, once you understand this foot foe you can take the necessary steps to protect yourself.

How Fungal Infections Spread

Fungi love places that are moist and warm. Humid environments—which are plentiful in the summer- are their ideal breeding ground. That’s why they’re likely to be hanging out at the town pool, in gym locker rooms and showers, at the nail salon, and inside your shoes.  Fungal infections are very easy to spread. All you have to do is come in direct contact with the infection either from another person or from a surface that an infected person has touched.

Take Evasive Action

Knowing where to find fungi and how they spread makes it easy to prevent them. Below are some suggestions to help:

  • Wear shoes in public places. Keep flip-flops or shower shoes handy for the pool, beach, or other public swimming areas, gyms, etc.

  • Know your salon. If you get professional pedicures, be sure your salon is licensed by the state. Observe their practices. All footbaths should be sanitized between customers. All clippers and other nail tools should be disinfected in an autoclave or solution. Better still—bring your own nail tools.

  • Don’t let feet sit in damp socks. If your feet perspire heavily try dusting them with an anti-fungal powder in the morning. Keep an extra pair of socks in your desk or bag and change when you notice your feet feel sweaty.

  • Wear shoes made of breathable material. Try not to wear the same pair two days in a row. It’s best to let shoes air out between uses.

  • Don’t share any items that touch another person’s feet. This includes socks, shoes, towels, emery boards, and nail clippers.

Know the signs of a fungal infection. Itchy, red, flaky skin and toenails that are discolored and thick with crumbly edges are symptoms that should be evaluated by our podiatrists, Dr. Bruce Miller and Dr. Gregory Mangum.
