In August we at Texas Foot Specialists celebrate National “I Love My Feet” Day on August 17th. It’s a great reminder to show gratitude for those amazing structures--your feet--which enable you to walk, run, stand, squat, jump and pretty much do all your daily activities. Below are some ways to show your feet the appreciation they deserve.

  1. Commit to a daily foot care regimen. In just a few minutes a day, you can improve the health and wellness of your feet. Wash feet daily with soap and water. Dry completely, including between your toes. Dust feet with an antifungal or foot powder in the morning and end the day by massaging feet with a rich, emollient cream.

  2. Replace worn-out shoes. Shoes that are stretched out, have worn down treads and flattened insoles can cause foot pain and even a trip and fall injury. Good quality shoes that fit properly are one of the best gifts you can give your feet.

  3. Maintain a healthy weight. Your feet carry the weight of your entire body. When you run, your feet absorb a force equal to up to 5 times your body weight. Being overweight raises your risk for many common foot problems. Losing extra pounds can decrease foot pain.

  4. Quit smoking. Smoking impedes circulation which can decrease blood flow to your feet. This means cuts and wounds will be slow to heal and your feet won’t feel and function as well as they should.

  5. Don’t put off seeking treatment for foot pain. Our podiatrists, Dr. Bruce Miller and Dr. Gregory Mangum, will find the source of your discomfort and prescribe the right treatment to bring you relief. Delaying contacting the foot doctor will only cause unnecessary suffering and may result in a worsening of your condition.
