Detecting Flat Foot and Fallen Arches

The middle of our feet should arch when standing. Flat feet or fallen arches occurs when our feet remains flat to the floor. This is a common occurrence in children and should not be a cause of concern. However, this should disappear as the foot develops with age.

 

Signs and Symptoms of a Fallen Arches or Flat Foot

 

People could go through life without noticing flat foot. It becomes a concern when it makes it difficult for us to perform simple activities such as walking or standing up. Symptoms of flat feet or a fallen arch includes:

 

- Pain felt when standing or walking

- Tenderness or swelling at the bottom of the feet

- Leg pain that seems to emanate from the bottom of the feet

 

Finding flat feet in children should not be a cause of major concern. The feet undergoes like many parts of the body undergo changes in our early years that having flat feet can be part of the process. But this should disappear as our body matures.

 

Flat feet in adulthood can be caused by several factors aside from it developing properly. This can be caused by obesity which places extra pressure on our feet. Too much body weight simply makes it harder for our feet to maintain its proper form. It can also be seen in pregnant women who have the task of carrying a growing baby.
