Essential Foot Care for Diabetics

Practicing proper foot care is a must for diabetics. Diabetes can interfere with the normal healing process or make it difficult to identify wounds because of nerve damage. An infection if left unchecked, could lead to serious complications which can lead to amputation.

A podiatrist can help identify and recommend proper treatment for foot conditions. This can help diabetics avoid serious complications.

To ensure optimum foot health and prevent foot injuries, below are a few foot care tips.

·       Avoid going barefoot even in your home. Diabetics suffering from nerve damage can have a difficult time identifying a wound or injury.

·       Shop for shoes during the late afternoon or in the evening when the foot has reached its maximum size.

·       Wear padded socks without seams made of fiber.

·       Wear low-heeled shoes that support your arch and those with a wide toe base.

·       Cut your toenails properly: straight across, and file those rough edges.

·       Visit your doctor if you have calluses, corns and ingrown toenails. Have them treated medically to prevent any complications.

·       Cotton or wool socks are the best because it keeps your feet dry and warm.

·       Shake off your shoes before putting them on. This will remove any objects that are inside your shoes and can prevent injury such as small pebbles.

·       Never use heating pads or hot water bottles since it can burn your feet. Use lukewarm water to prevent burns.

·       Wear shoes that are made from soft leather or similar materials.

·       Inspect your feet daily for any signs of wounds and infection.

·       Moisturize your feet on top and bottom area using lotion or petroleum jelly, but never in-between your toes.

Inspecting your feet regularly is essential for diabetics. Early detection and treatment of wounds or injures reduces your risk for developing serious complication. Unchecked, infection can lead to gangrene making amputation the only treatment option available.
