At Texas Foot Specialists, we know that year after year one of the most common New Year’s resolutions is to get in shape. We’re pretty certain that our patients are no exception! We applaud attempts to increase exercise and make it a regular part of your life. There are many benefits to your feet and the rest of your body, including:

  • Losing weight or maintaining a healthy weight

  • Increasing circulation

  • Lowering blood sugar, which helps prevent diabetes

  • Decreasing the risk of heart disease, arthritis and high blood pressure

  • Maintaining flexibility and range of motion

  • Increasing overall sense of well being

Before you dive headfirst into a new exercise plan, however, there are a few precautions you should take.

  1. Consult your doctor before starting a new exercise plan. This means your primary care physician and also our podiatrists Dr. Bruce Miller and Dr. Gregory Mangum. The foot doctor will want to do a complete examination of your feet and ankles and get a medical history to ensure that there are no conditions that could impede your ability to exercise. If you have a chronic foot problem, such as plantar fasciitis or bunions, the foot doctor may make recommendations about the type of fitness activity or the footwear that would be best for your condition. In some cases, a custom orthotic device may be prescribed to wear inside your shoes.

  2. Get shoes specifically designed for the sport or exercise you plan to do. Different activities require different actions and movements of your feet and ankles. Your best bet is to go to a professional sports footwear shoe store for assistance.

  3. Maintain good podiatric hygiene. Wash your feet daily and dry them completely to prevent athlete’s foot and other infections from developing.

  4. Choose a sound fitness program. It’s important that you start gradually and build up your endurance with a new exercise plan. Be sure warmups and stretching are part of your fitness routine.

  5. Embark on a healthy routine for your entire body. Eat a well-balanced diet, drink plenty of fluids and don’t smoke to maintain good lung capacity and circulation.
