As the coronavirus pandemic drags on, many of our patients at Texas Foot Specialists are becoming increasingly sedentary. Working from home and the shutdown of many fitness activities are combining to undermining many people’s resolve to stay in shape. One simple solution is walking.

Four reasons to take a walk today:

  1. It’s a good first step if you’ve slipped into couch-potato mode. Walking is an easy re-entry into fitness. If you haven’t been exercising regularly for a while, a walk is a great way to get moving without leaving you sore and exhausted. You can also gradually increase the duration and speed of your walk or add weights and other challenges if you are starting at a higher fitness level. If you do experience foot or ankle pain after walking, however, be sure to make an appointment at our Sugar Land (281-242-4448), Pasadena (281-991-0600), or Houston (713-664-6677) offices and get it checked out by our podiatrists, Dr. Bruce Miller and Dr. Gregory Mangum. Foot problems are best treated in their earliest stages. Continuing to walk on a hurting foot often causes a condition to worsen.

  2. Walking is convenient. You don’t need any fancy equipment other than a decent pair of walking shoes. You can do it pretty much anywhere, inside or out. It’s also an activity that can be done while observing safe social distancing.

  3. Adding walking to your daily schedule can help you fight the ‘Quarantine 15’. Regular physical activity is a significant factor in fighting weight gain. Of course, it will be most effective if you also modify what you’re eating and pay attention to portions and serving sizes.

  4. Walking can improve your mood. A good brisk walk releases mood-elevating endorphins. It also clears your head and gives you a change of scenery. Mental health breaks are more important than ever, especially if you are working at home alone.
