Orthotics Relieve Pain from Common Foot Conditions

At Texas Foot Specialists, we know that when many of our patients hear “orthotics” they picture clunky “old person” shoe inserts. However, today’s orthotics are custom made from a digital or another type of mold of your actual foot. This means, unlike general over-the-counter inserts, a custom orthotic is made specifically to correct a problem that is unique to the structure of your foot. This is why it can be a great help in relieving pain in a wide range of podiatric problems, such as the problems listed below.

Bunions and Other Deformities—A bunion occurs when the bone at the base of the big toe begins to move out of place, drifting toward the second toe. Hammertoes and claw toes refer to a toe bending downward at one of the joints. Oftentimes, the source of these conditions is faulty foot mechanics. Orthotics can protect vulnerable areas and reposition toes properly to slow the progression of these conditions.

Plantar Fasciitis—Although the most common symptom of this podiatric problem is heel pain, the root of the disorder can usually be found in the arch of the foot. As the arch flattens, it puts excess pressure on the heel. Orthotics that increase arch support can decrease symptoms.

Back Pain—You know the old song, “the foot bones connected to the ankle bone, etc.” Well, it’s true when it comes to pain running from your back down through your knees, ankles, and feet. Poor biomechanics and feet that roll or turn out of their normal position can cause pain in a number of spots in your lower extremities and back. In some cases, fixing the feet with orthotics can also fix back and knee pain as well.

Diabetes—another important role of orthotics is to provide extra padding or cushioning. This is particularly important in patients who suffer from diabetes. If you have a sore spot or an area that is susceptible to wounds, orthotics can offer a buffer between foot and footwear for extra protection.
