8 Tips for Shopping for Shoes with Kids

The school year is in full swing and many families did back to school shoe shopping just a few months ago. But kids' feet grow so quickly that you may find yourself heading back to the store sooner than you planned. Here are some tips to ensure that your next purchase is a successful one.

  1. Have your children's feet professionally measured each time you buy them shoes. Kids' shoe sizes change often.

  2. Bring your kids with you to the shoe store. They need to try on the shoes! Don't just assume that each pair in their size will fit comfortably.

  3. Be sure that your child is wearing the kind of socks that she or he will wear with the shoes you plan to buy.

  4. If your child wears custom orthotics, be sure to bring them along

  5. Shop in the afternoon when feet tend to be biggest.

  6. Good shoes don't need to be "broken in." They're comfortable right out of the box.

  7. Choose a shoe that retains some flexibility while offering effective support. Ideally, the shoe should be stiff in the middle but have a soft toe box.

  8. Don't ever buy used shoes. Second-hand stores are great for clothes, but those pre-owned shoes have probably lost their cushioning and support. Plus, they could come with unwanted guests - germs that can lead to toenail fungus and other infections.

Of course, the best way to ensure your child's foot health is with regular visits to the podiatrist. Your foot doctor is the best-qualified medical professional to diagnose and treat any illnesses of or injuries to your family's feet, ankles, and lower legs.
