Ankle Injuries Require Immediate Assistance

Foot and ankle injuries are common reasons that patients visit the podiatrist's office. We often see men, women, and children who have hurt their ankles playing sports or by tripping or falling.

What Is a Sprained Ankle?

Ankle sprains are common injuries that occur when one or more of the ligaments in the ankle joint is over-stretched or torn. Nearly 85% of ankle sprains occur laterally; that is, on the outside of the joint.

Signs and Symptoms of Ankle Sprain

Almost any ankle sprain will result in discomfort, pain, and swelling in the affected area. It may be difficult to walk on the injured leg. Your podiatrist will diagnose your sprain by type, depending on its severity.  In a Type 1 ankle sprain, the least severe, ligament fibers have been stretched or slightly torn. A Type 2 sprain occurs when some of these fibers or ligaments are completely torn but others remain intact. Type 3 sprains are the most severe. This is when the entire ligament is torn. Significant pain and instability of the ankle joint typically result. This injury is often accompanied by one or more fractures in the ankle, foot, or leg.

Getting Treatment for a Sprained Ankle

If you think you may have sprained your ankle, the first thing you should do is to call your podiatrist. With decades of specialized training and experience, your foot doctor is the best-qualified medical professional to help you. If, after diagnosis, your podiatrist confirms your suspicion of an ankle sprain, treatment options may include:

  • RICE (rest, icing, compression, elevation)

  • over-the-counter and prescription medication for pain and swelling

  • taping or wrapping for stability

  • crutches to aid in standing and walking

  • physical therapy to aid in recovery

  • custom orthotics to provide cushioning and support and reduce the likelihood of future injuries

  • surgery, but only in the most severe cases
