How to Choose a Great Pair of Sandals

The end of summer is a great time to score a new pair of sandals at a great price, but those cute shoes aren’t going to be much of a bargain if you can’t wear them.  Here are some tips to help you make a great selection:

1.     Make sure that you’re choosing a pair of sandals that really fit. When was the last time that your feet were professionally measured? Foot length and width can change with age. You know the black metal object with slides and scales to measure your foot size? It’s called a Brannock device. If it’s been more than a year since you stepped on one, skip the online shopping and head into your favorite shoe store to get the latest data before making your selection.

2.     Choose a comfortable pair of sandals with plenty of arch support. High heels and flip-flops should be reserved for special occasions. Straps will allow for an adjustable, customizable fit. Sandals made of natural materials will allow your feet to breathe and will limit sweat, helping to reduce your risk of athlete’s foot and other fungal infections.

3.     If you’ll be regularly wearing your new sandals without socks, spray them periodically with a disinfectant such as Lysol to kill anything that might be living in them.

To keep feet, ankles, and lower legs healthy and pain-free throughout the year, see a podiatrist regularly.
