Self-Care for Your Feet and Ankles

In many ways, our good health is up to each of us. We know that there are things that we can do to protect our overall wellness:

  • quit smoking

  • eat a balanced diet low in sugar and rich in produce, whole grains, lean protein and low-fat dairy products

  • drink alcohol only in moderation

  • exercise regularly

  • wear seat belts (and helmets where appropriate)

Of course, in helping us maintain whole-body health, each of these steps is also good for your feet, ankles, and lower legs. However, there are steps that you can take specifically to ensure the health and wellness of those parts of your body.

  1. Practice good hygiene: Prevent athlete’s foot and other fungal infections by washing feet daily with antibacterial soap. Dry them well, especially between the toes.

  2. Keep feet covered: You can be exposed to those same contagious infections in locker rooms, hotel rooms, and other places where many people spend time barefoot. Stay safe by wearing shower shoes and slippers to act as a barrier between germs and your feet.

  3. Inspect feet regularly: Use your eyes and your hands to look and feel for changes. Take special note of any changes to the skin of your feet and any changes to their shape especially near the toes, which could indicate developing bunions or hammertoes.

  4. Support your foot health with good footwear choices: You might love those pointy high heels or flat flip-flops, but wearing them every day can damage your feet and even lead to foot and ankle injury. For daily use, stick to supportive, comfortable shoes with a wide toe box and low chunky heel. Rubber soles will increase stability and decrease your risk of a fall.

  5. And yes, see your foot doctor once a year for examination, diagnosis, and treatment if necessary. With years of specialized training and experience, your podiatrist is the best-qualified medical professional to care for your feet, ankles, and lower legs.
