Three Tips for Sticking to Your Exercise Program

When you exercise regularly, you create numerous benefits for overall health. Whether you choose to walk or run outdoors, to go to the gym, or to participate in the occasional gentle yoga class, you’ll lower your risk of global health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes.  Men, women, and children who exercise are less likely to face depression, anxiety and other mental health issues. Working out is also good for your feet, ankles, and lower legs. People who exercise regularly enjoy higher bone density and stronger, more flexible muscles than those who don’t.

But you won’t get any of these benefits if you don’t actually exercise! It can be challenging to stick to your exercise program, but you can do it! Here are three tips to help:

  1. Set time aside on your calendar for exercise. Make a “meeting” with yourself and turn down anything that will conflict with that appointment.

  2. Exercise with a friend. You’ll be less likely to cancel your plans if someone else is involved and, as a bonus, you’ll get to catch up and enjoy a deeper relationship with someone you care about.

  3. Exercise shoes should be replaced at least once a year or after 500 road miles, whichever comes first. If your sneakers are older than that, head to the store for a professional fitting and treat yourself to a new pair.

If it’s been a while since you’ve exercised or if discomfort is keeping you on the couch, it’s time for a visit with your foot doctor.
