Smoothing the Transition to Fall Footwear

At Texas Foot Specialists we’re seeing more patients with complaints of foot pain as we get further along into fall. One reason is making the switch from summer to fall shoes and boots. For many patients it’s also about spending more time in an office or other professional setting the requires something more than your slippers! Below are some tips for easing this transition for your feet.

Get Measured—It’s not unusual for feet to increase in size as you age. If you’re pregnant or have gained weight that can also cause your feet to spread and flatten necessitating a larger size shoe. Even once you know your correct size, it’s important to always try on both shoes and spend some time walking around the store in them to ensure they fit properly. Poorly fitting shoes are one of the primary sources of foot pain.

Check on Chronic Podiatric Problems—If you have a bunion, hammertoe, plantar fasciitis or other ongoing foot problem it may be that your condition has progressed to a point where a change in treatment is required. Increased activity and changes in footwear styles (such as closed shoes versus sandals or going barefoot) may be putting more pressure on a vulnerable spot.

Choose Footwear Wisely—What you wear on your feet obviously greatly impacts how they feel. Look for good arch support if you are experiencing heel pain. Many popular fashion boots are notorious for not having adequate arch support. Cushioned insoles and heel beds may increase comfort as well. Be sure toe boxes are roomy and avoid heels higher than two inches to avoid excessive strain to the ball of your foot and toes. Soft, flexible materials will also be more comfortable.

Work Up to It—As you transition to the more structured styles of fall professional footwear start by wearing these shoes for a few hours a day and gradually increasing the amount of time you spend in them. It’s also a good idea to alternate your footwear and not wear the same pair of shoes or boots for multiple days in a row.

If you continue to experience foot pain, make an appointment with our podiatrists, Dr. Bruce Miller and Dr. Gregory Mangum by contacting our Sugar Land (281-242-4448), Pasadena (281-991-0600) or Houston (713-664-6677) office to get it evaluated.
